Man, lots of heroes and villains to write about this week.
Let’s start with the good stuff. Tiger Woods won his 11th major professional golf championship, and at the 18th hole of the British Open, the world’s most famous golfer broke down in uncontrollable sobs.
Woods was letting out some grief associated with the May death of his father and best friend, Earl Woods.
Woods is by far one of the greatest examples of how a professional athlete should behave. He doesn’t blame anybody when he plays poorly, and he doesn’t gloat in victory or about his dominance of the game.
Woods is a sportsman, through and through, and his victory on Sunday is one for the ages.
Another victory that came over the weekend was the thriller in Paris, when American Floyd Landis took the yellow jersey in the Tour de France. It was the culmination of a great cycling race that saw the lead change hands a record 10 times, something that was not possible when racing legend Lance Armstrong won his record seven races.
It was nice to see the competition vary so much. It was also nice to see France again, this time without any headbutting controversy.
Of course, it wouldn’t be right for there to be just good news making headlines.
Did you hear Paris Hilton is a blond icon of her time, comparable to Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana?
The famous heir-head told Britain’s Sunday Times that, “every decade has an iconic blonde — like Marilyn Monroe or Princess Diana — and right now, I’m that icon.”
Why, Paris? Because you make classic films or work with the United Nations for the welfare of children throughout the world? Because you’ve been romantically linked with the leader of the free world, or because you married a prince?
I’m a little confused about Hilton’s logic, but then again, “Hilton’s logic” might be an oxymoron.
To be fair, Hilton has a pop-music CD out that is actually quite good. I wonder what would have been if she had never made the rounds with the publicity-mongering crowd.
What if she had come out with this CD before the sex-tape scandal or the party-girl reputation took hold?
Perhaps she would have some respect? Perhaps her career would be more than a cartoon?
Who knows?
Vacation, All You Ever Wanted…
I took a vacation with Mrs. Grrr! and daughter Maxine to the Outer Banks of North Carolina last week, and aside from watching tropical storm Beryl’s direction half the time, the place was gorgeous, relaxing and a lot of fun.
The Outer Banks looks like a real estate agent’s dream, as each weekend hundreds of beachfront homes change hands as renters flock to the island for some fun in the sun.
You might recall my It’s the Service Stupid column from a few weeks ago, in which I told some stories about bad service encounters of my own.
I am happy to report that the folks at The Bad Bean Mexican restaurant in the Tim Buck II shopping center (look for the mini-cart raceway), led by owners George Robinson and John Lenhart, were some of the nicest people on the beach.
I’ve never seen a group of people so happy to get slammed during a lunch rush, and the food was great. Definitely check it out if you’re down there and just looking for some informal dining.
Of course, the angry signs at one of the coffee shops demanding small bills made me go Grrr! a little bit. I can understand the frustration of getting $20 after $20 for a $2 cup of coffee, but it shouldn’t be the customer’s responsibility.
But hey, if that’s the worst thing that happened, when just a continent away war is erupting, I can live with that.
