Cops arrest man accused of violent sex assaults in Durham

A suspect wanted for violent sexual assaults in Oshawa and Ajax this week is now in police custody.

Durham Regional Police said officers responded shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday for reports of a sexual assault at an apartment complex in the area of St. Lawrence St. and Simcoe St. S.

According to police, a man armed with a knife sexually assaulted a female in the lobby of the building.

When cops arrived to the scene, both the suspect and victim had left the area.

Police said the suspect was then seen shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday in the area of Harwood Ave. S. and Hunt St. in Ajax. Cops believe he sexually assaulted a second victim.

On Friday, police announced the arrest of the suspect by Peterborough Police. He was then transferred to Durham Regional Police custody.

Evan Sweet, 28, of no fixed address, is charged with robbery, assault causing bodily harm, two counts of sexual assault, and forcible confinement.

He was held for a bail hearing.
